How Do You Estimate Vegetable Garden Yield?
This vegetable yield calculator works from published per-plant yield figures — how many pounds a single plant of a given crop typically produces over a full growing season. Multiply that by your plant count (or estimate plant count from your bed’s square footage) and you get an estimated total harvest weight.
Real yield varies a lot from these averages. Variety matters — a cherry tomato plant can produce nearly double the fruit weight of a standard slicing tomato. Climate and length of growing season matter, since more warm weeks generally means more harvest. Soil quality, consistent watering, and pest pressure all shift real-world results up or down, sometimes significantly. Treat every number here as a reasonable planning average, not a guarantee — your actual garden will tell you its own numbers after a season or two.
The calculator handles two common starting points: if you already know how many plants you have, use Number of Plants mode directly. If you’re still planning a bed and thinking in square footage, use Growing Area mode, which estimates plant count from typical spacing for that crop first.

Fruiting crops that vine or branch heavily (winter squash, cucumbers, indeterminate tomatoes) produce far more per plant than crops harvested as a single unit (lettuce, broccoli, radishes) — that gap is real and consistent across most yield data, not an artifact of this particular chart.
A note on tomato varieties: the table above uses a single ~5 lb figure for standard tomatoes, but variety type makes a significant difference. Indeterminate varieties (most heirlooms, many beefsteaks, most cherry types) keep growing and setting fruit all season — they typically yield 15–25 lbs per plant over a full season, though that harvest is spread out over many weeks. Determinate varieties (Roma, most paste types, many modern slicers) stop growing at a set height and ripen their fruit in a concentrated window, typically yielding 8–12 lbs per plant but delivering most of it within a few weeks. If you know which type you’re growing, adjust your expectation accordingly — the ~5 lb default in the calculator is a conservative cross-variety average that can substantially underestimate a well-grown indeterminate plant.
How Much to Plant Per Person
The yield calculator answers “what will my garden produce?” — but the companion question is “how much should I plant to feed my family?” These are per-person planting guidelines derived from typical garden productivity and average household consumption. They assume a reasonable growing season; succession-sown crops (marked below) require replanting every 2–3 weeks to sustain harvest through the season.

These figures target fresh eating, not preservation. If you plan to can, freeze, or dry a crop, roughly double or triple the planting for that crop. A family of four multiplies each figure above by four, though households that eat a particular vegetable very frequently will want to scale further.
Worked Example
Say you’re growing 6 tomato plants this season.
- Per-plant yield: ~5.0 lbs (from the reference chart above).
- Total plants: 6.
- Estimated total yield: 6 × 5.0 = 30 lbs for the season.
Switch to Growing Area mode with a 24 sq ft bed of tomatoes instead (at 4 sq ft per plant): the calculator estimates 6 plants fit, then applies the same 5.0 lbs-per-plant figure for the same 30 lb estimate — the two modes agree because they’re built on the same underlying per-plant number, just starting from a different known quantity.
Common Mistakes
- Expecting textbook yields without accounting for local conditions. Published averages assume reasonably good soil, consistent water, and a full growing season. A hot, dry summer or nutrient-poor soil can easily cut real yield well below the estimate.
- Overcrowding, which reduces per-plant yield. Cramming plants closer than the spacing these estimates assume means more competition for light, water, and nutrients — often producing less total harvest, not more, despite the extra plants.
- Not succession planting for continuous harvest. A single planting of a fast-maturing crop like lettuce or radishes gives one harvest window; staggering plantings every couple of weeks extends the total season yield well past what a one-time estimate suggests.
