How Much Sod Do You Need?
The math behind this sod calculator is simple once you have the right inputs: find your lawn’s area, add a waste factor for cutting pieces to fit non-rectangular edges, then divide by how much square footage a single pallet actually covers — rounded up, since suppliers sell whole pallets, not fractions of one.
Pallets needed = ROUNDUP( Area × (1 + Waste Factor) ÷ Pallet Coverage )
The part most sod calculators get wrong, or skip entirely, is that “pallet coverage” isn’t one fixed number. It genuinely depends on which grass type you’re buying — see the next section for why.
Why Pallet Coverage Varies by Grass Type
This is genuinely a physics problem, not a marketing distinction. Warm-season grasses — Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Augustine, and centipede — spread using stolons and rhizomes (runners), root systems that don’t roll cleanly into a tight cylinder. Growers cut them as thicker, heavier slabs with more soil attached to keep the piece intact during handling. A heavier piece means a truck or pallet can carry less total area before hitting its weight limit, so warm-season pallets typically cover only 400–450 sq ft.
Cool-season grasses — tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, and ryegrass — grow in dense, fibrous-rooted bunches that hold together in a thinner cut. Growers harvest them thinner and sell them as rolls rather than individual slabs. Lighter weight per square foot means a pallet carries more total area before hitting the same truck weight limit — typically 500–600 sq ft.
Both are constrained by the exact same delivery truck weight limits; the coverage difference is just how that limit plays out against two different harvest thicknesses. 450 sq ft is the Turfgrass Producers International industry-standard figure and a safe planning default if you don’t know your grass type yet, but confirm the real number with your actual supplier before you place an order — individual farms and grass varieties vary within these ranges.

Choosing Your Waste Factor
Waste comes from cutting rectangular sod pieces to fit a lawn that isn’t a perfect rectangle — every curved bed edge, walkway, or tree ring leaves an offcut you can’t reuse elsewhere. Use 5% for a simple rectangular lawn with straight edges, 10% for a lawn with some curved edges or a driveway to work around (a reasonable default for most yards), and 15% for a lawn with multiple obstacles — trees, island beds, walkways — or several separate irregular sections.
Worked Example
Let’s sod a 40 × 25 ft rectangular lawn with tall fescue, using the default 10% waste factor for a few curved bed edges:
- Area: 40 ft × 25 ft = 1,000 sq ft.
- Add waste factor: 1,000 × 1.10 = 1,100 sq ft.
- Pallet coverage: tall fescue = 500 sq ft per pallet (the typical cool-season figure from the reference table above; confirm with your supplier).
- Pallets: 1,100 ÷ 500 = 2.2 → round up to 3 pallets.
- Individual pieces: 1,100 ÷ 2.75 sq ft per piece ≈ 400 pieces.
So this lawn needs 3 pallets of tall fescue sod — or about 400 individual pieces, if your supplier sells by the piece instead of the pallet. Those 3 pallets cover 1,500 sq ft against the 1,100 sq ft actually needed, so expect roughly 400 sq ft of leftover material from rounding up to a whole pallet — useful for the offcuts a real install always produces.
Sod vs. Seed: Which Should You Choose?
This is a genuinely common fork in the road, and neither option is right for everyone. Sod gives you an instant, usable lawn — there’s no bare-soil period where wind, foot traffic, or heavy rain can wash everything away, which makes it the practical choice on slopes or anywhere erosion is a real risk. The tradeoff is cost: sod runs substantially more per square foot than seed, both in materials and the labor to install it before it dries out.
Seed costs far less and gives you access to a much wider range of grass varieties and blends than most sod farms carry. The tradeoff runs the other way: a seeded lawn takes a full growing season to fully establish, needs consistent watering during that whole window, and is vulnerable to washing out or drying out before it roots.

What Sod Costs
This calculator deliberately doesn’t estimate a dollar cost, for the same reason we don’t publish a tree-planting-cost calculator: material and labor pricing vary too much by region, season, and supplier for a single national figure to be honest rather than misleading. What follows are general ranges, not a quote.
Sod material typically runs roughly $0.25–$0.80 per sq ft depending on grass type and region, with premium or specialty varieties running higher. Professional installation adds significantly more on top of material cost, since it includes soil prep, labor, and equipment. Get local quotes from sod farms and landscapers in your area for a number you can actually budget against — anything more precise than that, without knowing your region, would be a guess dressed up as a calculation.
Preparing the Ground First
Sod is only as good as what’s underneath it. It needs roughly 4–6 inches of prepared soil beneath it to root well, and existing grass and weeds should be removed first rather than sodded directly over — sod laid over live vegetation roots poorly and the old growth can come back through the seams. Common Mistakes
- Ordering exactly the measured area with no waste factor. Every real lawn has some edge that isn’t a clean rectangle. Ordering the bare minimum means running short mid-install, with a fresh-cut pallet gap to fill on short notice.
- Assuming every pallet covers 450 sq ft. That’s an industry-standard planning figure, not a guarantee — your supplier’s actual coverage depends on their grass type and how they cut it. Confirm the real number before you order, especially for a large area where the difference compounds.
- Not preparing the soil beneath the sod. Sod laid on unprepared, compacted, or debris-filled ground struggles to root regardless of how fresh it was when it arrived. Soil prep happens before the sod is delivered, not after.
- Letting delivered sod sit. Sod should be installed within 24 hours of delivery. The longer it waits on a pallet, especially in heat, the more it dries out, yellows, and struggles to root once it’s finally laid.
