Powdery mildew is one of the most recognizable plant diseases there is — a fungal disease, in the family Erysiphaceae, that coats leaves, stems, and buds in what looks like a dusting of flour or powdered sugar. That white coating is genuinely distinctive once you know what to look for, but it gets confused with two other things worth ruling out first: downy mildew, a completely different disease, and a harmless mold that sometimes shows up on damp potting soil and isn’t a plant disease at all.

What Powdery Mildew Actually Is

What causes powdery mildew on plants? A group of closely related fungi in the family Erysiphaceae, all sharing the same white, powdery symptom the disease is named for. Unlike most fungal leaf diseases, powdery mildew fungi don’t need wet leaves or free water on the plant surface to infect — they only need high relative humidity in the air around the plant. That’s part of why the disease is so common and so persistent: per the University of Minnesota Extension, powdery mildew fungi thrive with cool, humid nights that trigger spore production, followed by warm (70 to 80°F), dry days that let those spores spread on the wind. Poor air circulation makes both halves of that cycle worse. What Does Powdery Mildew Look Like? Early Signs

The early signs of powdery mildew are small, circular, white or gray powdery spots on the upper leaf surface, often starting on the lower or older leaves first. As the infection progresses, those spots expand and merge until they cover large areas of the leaf, and eventually spread to stems and flower buds too. Common powdery mildew symptoms as the disease advances include leaf curling, twisting, and yellowing, and severely infected leaves may eventually dry out, turn brown, and drop. Which Plants Get It Most

Powdery mildew fungi are mostly host-specific — a species that infects oak leaves generally won’t jump to a nearby zinnia — but a few plant groups show up constantly across the real search data and extension guidance alike. Cucurbits (squash, zucchini, cucumbers) are among the most commonly affected vegetables. In the flower garden, per the University of Minnesota Extension, zinnia, phlox, bee balm, and peony are regularly infected. Roses, crape myrtle, and dogwood are also frequent hosts, according to Clemson’s HGIC. How to Treat Powdery Mildew

Powdery mildew treatment options range from doing nothing at all to specific fungicides, roughly in order of how accessible and low-risk they are. Fungicides won’t cure leaves that are already infected — per the University of Minnesota Extension, they only protect healthy tissue that hasn’t been infected yet, so timing matters more than which product you pick.

Potassium bicarbonate is the strongest real organic option in the data. It’s listed as its own dedicated active ingredient by both the University of Minnesota Extension (among the “low impact fungicides” it recommends, alongside sulfur and horticultural oils) and Clemson’s HGIC fungicide table. Baking soda spray (sodium bicarbonate) is a common home remedy in the same general category, but it’s a less standardized option — Clemson’s guidance lists it only as a substitute ingredient in a homemade combination (mixed with horticultural oil), rather than as its own dedicated fungicide product the way potassium bicarbonate is listed. Treat it as a real but secondary option, not a direct swap-in with identical results.

Copper fungicide for powdery mildew is another real, specific option — copper-based fungicides appear as their own listed active ingredient category in Clemson’s fungicide table for ornamental plants.

Organic fungicide for powdery mildew more broadly includes horticultural oils and neem oil. Per UC IPM, to treat mild to moderate infections, a horticultural oil such as a plant-based neem or jojoba oil can work well. Neem oil is a legitimate, real option here — just don’t expect it to be a cure-all on its own; it works best as part of the same early-intervention approach as the other options above.

Sulfur is another long-used option — per UC IPM, sulfur products have been used to manage powdery mildew for centuries, but they’re only effective when applied before symptoms appear, not after.

Whatever you use, remove and destroy (don’t compost) any heavily infected leaves or stems you prune off. Powdery mildew fungi survive winter on plant debris, so leaving infected material in the compost pile just gives next season’s infection a head start.

Preventing Powdery Mildew

Prevention does more real work here than treatment. Water at the soil line instead of overhead, and water in the morning rather than the evening so any foliage that does get wet has all day to dry — both practices reduce the humidity around the leaves without reducing how much water the plant actually gets.

Choosing resistant varieties where they’re available is a real, meaningful prevention step too. Cornell’s cucurbit disease research notes that resistance is now standard in most modern cucumber varieties, though resistance in other cucurbit types like pumpkin and squash is more limited and shouldn’t be relied on alone without good cultural practices. Avoid over-fertilizing with nitrogen as well — per the University of Minnesota Extension, heavy nitrogen pushes soft, succulent new growth that powdery mildew infects easily.

Powdery Mildew vs. Downy Mildew vs. Harmless Soil Mold

This is the genuine differentiation that matters most, and it comes down to exactly where the growth appears and what it looks like up close.

Powdery mildew forms a white to grayish, powdery or dusty coating on the upper leaf surface — the top of leaves, stems, and buds. It looks dry and dusty, almost like flour was sprinkled on.

Downy mildew is a completely different disease, caused by unrelated fungus-like organisms (family Peronosporaceae) despite the similar name. Per Wikipedia’s entry on the powdery mildew family, downy mildews “always grow on the underside of leaves, often causing yellowing on the upperside” — the growth itself looks fuzzy or felt-like rather than powdery, and is usually grayish, yellowish, or brownish rather than pure white. If what you’re looking at is on the bottom of the leaf and the top just looks yellowed or blotchy, that’s the tell.

Harmless soil mold is a different situation entirely — white or fuzzy growth on the surface of damp potting soil, not on the plant’s leaves at all. This is typically just a saprophytic fungus feeding on decaying organic matter in the potting mix, not a disease affecting the plant. It’s usually a sign the soil has been staying too wet rather than a problem in itself; letting the top of the soil dry out more between waterings and improving airflow around the pot generally clears it up on its own. Nothing needs to be treated on the plant.
